Turkish military helicopters collide in midair, killing six

Six military personnel, including a brigadier general, lost their lives after a midair collision between two Turkish military helicopters during a training exercise on Monday.

The incident occurred in the southwestern province of Isparta, where one UH-1 type helicopter crashed while the other managed to land safely.

"One of our UH-1 type helicopters, which was on a training flight in Isparta, suffered an accident, and five of our personnel were martyred," stated the National Defense Ministry. "One personnel was seriously injured and immediately transferred to the hospital, where treatment began."

Later updates confirmed that the injured soldier had also succumbed to his injuries, raising the death toll to six.

Among the victims was a brigadier general overseeing the aviation school, Isparta Governor Abdullah Erin told reporters.

The cause of the collision remains unclear, prompting the launch of an investigation.

Eyewitnesses reported the collision as a harrowing scene.

"Two helicopters collided in the air. We were driving on the road when we saw them ignite midair. One helicopter moved forward and managed to land, while the other crashed," described one witness.

Authorities have since cordoned off the crash site as investigators work to determine what caused the two aircraft to come into contact.
