In its announcement, the department highlighted the potential for adverse events such as flooding, hail, and lightning strikes.
The Meteorology Department has cautioned about heavy downpours expected to last until 10:00 AM today. It was noted that the anticipated rainfall in some areas could range between 21-50 kg/m², potentially leading to floods, overflows, hail, lightning strikes, and stormy winds.
Authorities have urged citizens to remain vigilant and take precautions, especially in open areas and while traveling.
Meanwhile, the Fire Department issued a warning against entering floodwaters to escape during a flood, emphasizing safety measures for potential flooding events.
In its written statement, the department shared a statement outlining precautions and safety measures to combat potential flood events, urging citizens to remain vigilant and department emphasized: “Under no circumstances should you enter floodwaters to escape during a flood.”The statement also offered advice on winter preparedness, including:
- Regular cleaning of drains, gutters, and drainage systems to ensure rainwater can flow without obstruction.
- Keeping sandbags at home to create barriers and prevent water from entering.
- Ensuring that sump pumps in basements are maintained and operational.
- Recognizing the first signs of water leakage, such as discoloration in paint or circular marks on walls, and addressing them promptly.
- Reporting blocked streams, culverts under bridges, or road drains to the relevant authorities to ensure necessary measures are taken.
In case of a flood, the Fire Department advised:
- Heeding weather warnings from the Meteorology Department.
- Avoiding outdoor activities unless absolutely necessary.
- Staying away from trees, telephone poles, and electrical poles to prevent lightning strikes.
- Contacting the 199 Fire Emergency Line or the 101 Civil Defense Emergency Line for assistance.
Guidelines for Vehicle Safety During Floods
The department provided specific advice for those caught in a flood while in a vehicle:
- Stop in time to avoid being swept away by water.
- Never attempt to cross a bridge during flooding.
- Avoid waterlogged roads at all costs, as ankle-deep water can sweep a person away, and knee-deep water can carry away vehicles.
