Student detained for drugs in north Cyprus

A 19-year-old student has been remanded in prison for 3 days after drugs were found in his vehicle in Haspolat.


The suspect, MUO, a 19-year-old student in north Cyprus was arrested on Thursday December 19 after drugs were found in his vehicle.

He was brought to court on Friday on charges of illegal possession of drugs.

Police in a court statement said on at around 4:30 pm on December 19, 2024, the police took action when a police team became suspicious of a vehicle used by the suspect in the parking area behind a supermarket within the Cyprus International University.

During the search of the vehicle, a sensitive scale used for weighing narcotics was found in a black bag in the pocket section behind the driver's seat of the vehicle.

The police stated that during the search conducted on the suspect, approximately 35 grams of cannabis type narcotics, 560 US Dollars 700 TL in cash, 2 mobile phones were found and taken as evidence.

The police officer noted that the suspect was arrested due to being caught red-handed and that statements were to be taken.

The police stated that the seized substance would be sent to the state chemistry laboratory, that the suspect's status in the country would be investigated, and requested that he be detained for 3 days.
