Man tried to escape from north Cyprus after allegedly assaulting his girlfriend

A man who was wanted for alleged violence against a woman in Gemikonağı, was caught at Ercan Airport in north Cyprus while he was about to leave the country.

The incident happened around 11:45 PM, on December 20, 2024, in Gemikonağı, north Cyprus.

The suspect BO, a Turkish national arrested and brought to court on Sunday on charges of intentional damage and assault.

Police in a court testimony said the suspect who stays as a guest at the residence belonging to one M.I.A, in Gemikonağı, allegedly damaged the door of the apartment. He reportedly used a fire extinguisher from the apartment corridor to intentionally strike the lock mechanism of the residence’s door because he could not open it. After causing the damage, he and his girlfriend, E.D., entered the residence.

The police stated that the suspect assaulted his girlfriend by grabbing her throat with his hand after she warned him about breaking the door.

Following the assault, the suspect left the scene but was apprehended on the same day at Ercan Airport while attempting to leave the country.

The police added that the investigation was still in its early stages, with statements to be taken and security camera footage to be examined. They requested that the suspect be detained for one day. The suspect, who spoke during the hearing, denied the assault charge.

The judge ordered that the suspect be detained for one day.
