Let's all say "stop" to traffic accidents and loss of life: TRNC police

Turkish Cypriot police on Monday called for safety for both drivers and pedestrians to help stop the traffic accidents and loss of life due to speed, carelessness and lack of lighting that invite accidents in north Cyprus.

The police emphasized that compliance with traffic regulations is essential to prevent traffic accidents. They highlighted that many accidents, often causing fatalities, severe injuries, and material losses, occur at roundabouts, intersections, and pedestrian crossings due to speeding, careless driving, and insufficient lighting, causing great sadness in society.

In a written statement, the police reiterated that along with law enforcement measures, adherence to traffic rules is crucial to collectively “say stop” to traffic accidents. The statement also reminded drivers and pedestrians of the traffic rules they need to follow.

According to the statement issued by the Police Press Office, the traffic rules for drivers are as follows:

  • Drivers must consider the condition of the road they are traveling on (speed limits, lighting, traffic density, adverse weather conditions, etc.).
  • When approaching roundabouts, intersections, and pedestrian crossings, they must reduce their speed to a safe level, travel slowly and carefully, and give way to pedestrians who have the right of way at crossings, as it is a legal obligation.

The rules pedestrians must follow were outlined as follows:

  • Pedestrians must walk on the right side of the road, on sidewalks or shoulders where available.
  • In urban areas, pedestrians must use crosswalks when crossing roads.
  • Where there are no crosswalks, they must cross the road in places where it is clear and does not obstruct moving traffic. However, they must not cross multi-way intersections such as four-way, five-way, or six-way junctions.
  • Pedestrians walking or jogging at night must wear light-colored clothing for visibility and carry reflective items or lights.
