“I was falsely accused; I didn’t steal anything”: Woman who's work permit was cancelled tells court

A woman has had her work permit canceled by the government of northern Cyprus over the alleged theft of over 20,000 Turkish Lira and items from the house where she worked as a cleaner in Kyrenia.

The suspect, PS, 24 who worked as a cleaner in an apartment in Girne was arrested and brought to court on charges of theft.

Police in court testimony said on December 3, 2024, between 8:00 PM and 9:00 PM, the suspect, who was working as a cleaner at a residence in the Beylerbeyi area of Girne, allegedly stole 20,000 TL in cash from a document bag placed on the wardrobe at the entrance of the house. 

Additionally, the suspect is accused of stealing a Coco Chanel Paris women’s perfume worth 7,310 TL, which was stored on the bedside table in the bedroom.

The police reported that on December 14, 2024, the stolen items were found in P.S.’s bag by the homeowner. 

Following the homeowner’s report, the items were seized as evidence, and the suspect was caught and arrested in the act. The officer added that during her statement, the suspect denied the charges and the case against her.

The police officer stated that the part of the investigation where the suspect could potentially interfere has been completed and that her work permit has been canceled. Accordingly, the officer requested bail conditions.

When given the right to speak, the suspect said, “I was falsely accused; I didn’t steal anything.”

The judge who noted that the suspect worked for the complainant, her work permit had been canceled, she had no ties left to the TRNC, and she did not have a permanent residence ordered her to be sent to prison for a period not exceeding 20 days.
