Europe faces surge in flu and RSV cases amid holiday season, ECDC warns

A sharp rise in flu and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) cases is sweeping across Europe.

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has issued an alert, citing widespread activity of both RSV and flu across nearly all EU member states. The agency warns that the upcoming holiday season, marked by increased gatherings, is likely to accelerate the transmission of respiratory viruses.

In its latest update, the ECDC noted that the flu season has already begun, with a 10% positivity rate recorded across the EU. The most common flu strains circulating include influenza A (H1N1), responsible for the 2009 pandemic, and H3N2.

The co-circulation of flu, RSV, and low-level but persistent COVID-19 transmission could place a significant burden on healthcare systems, the agency said. Hospitalisations are anticipated to span all age groups, with young children and older adults particularly at risk due to RSV. The impact of the flu could be exacerbated if the H3N2 strain, which is less effectively covered by current Northern Hemisphere vaccines, becomes dominant.

Eduardo Colzani, head of the ECDC’s respiratory virus division, urged national authorities to prepare for a potential surge in cases. “As we approach the festive season, respiratory virus transmission is expected to rise further,” he said.

Colzani recommended basic preventive measures such as maintaining good respiratory hygiene, ventilating indoor spaces, and staying home when unwell. He also called on eligible individuals to get vaccinated without delay to reduce the strain on healthcare systems and safeguard vulnerable populations.

“By taking these steps, we can protect ourselves and loved ones, ease the pressure on hospitals, and ensure we celebrate the holidays in good health,” Colzani added.
