Doctors warn of rising seasonal infections across Cyprus and EU
While influenza levels remain low, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) forecasts an uptick in flu cases from late December.
Some EU member states are already reporting gradual increases, according to ECDC’s weekly report.
“We’re seeing the usual and expected seasonal respiratory infections”, pulmonologist Charis Armeftis told philenews.
He explained that these infections fall into two categories: upper respiratory tract infections like common colds and flu, and lower respiratory tract infections such as pneumonia.
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) cases remain elevated, while COVID-19 cases are stable without any current surge, according to EU data.
The ECDC reports that the number of patients seeking primary and hospital care for respiratory conditions remains within seasonal expectations.
Armeftis emphasised the importance of vaccination for protection, particularly against flu complications, and warned against the inappropriate use of antibiotics for viral infections.
He advised patients to consult their doctors if symptoms persist beyond 3-4 days.
