TRNC police release data on violence against women: 913 reported in 11 months

The TRNC General Directorate of Police has released data on violence against women ahead of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on 25 November.

Under the theme “Zero Tolerance for Violence Against Women”, the report details complaints received by the Violence Against Women Intervention Branches between 1 January and 20 November 2024, Kibris Postasi reported.

During this period, 913 complaints were made, including 425 cases of physical violence, 306 of verbal abuse, 13 of sexual violence, and 169 related to other issues.

The Police reiterated their commitment to tackling violence against women with sensitivity and a zero-tolerance policy. They assured the public that all reports would be thoroughly investigated under existing laws, with necessary legal action taken promptly.

November 25: Raising Awareness All Year Round

In a statement, the Police highlighted that 25 November was designated by the United Nations General Assembly in 1999 to raise awareness of violence against women. They emphasised their year-round dedication to combating violence, not just on this significant day.

To strengthen their response, the Violence Against Women Intervention Branch, initially established in Nicosia in 2018, was expanded nationwide in 2021, ensuring rapid response across all districts.

The Police reminded the public that support is available 24/7 through the ‘155 Police Emergency’ hotline and district-specific numbers:

  • Lefkosia: 0548 811 31 83
  • Famagusta: 0548 811 41 83
  • Kyrenia: 0548 811 51 83
  • Güzelyurt: 0548 811 61 83
  • Iskele: 0548 811 71 83

In 2024, all reports of violence against women were promptly addressed, thoroughly investigated, and handled in accordance with the law.
