Man found with a gun in Kyrenia came to north Cyprus to kill a business man
The suspect, MCS who was arrested on Wednesday was brought to court on Thursday and Friday on charges of "Unlawful Possession and Carrying of Firearms and Explosives."
Police said he came to northern Cyprus to shoot a businessman; two individuals who helped him obtain a firearm have been arrested too.
The incident came to light when a handgun was discovered in a flower pot in front of a café in Kyrenia. During the court hearing, police provided details, stating that suspects M.C.S., U.Y., and S.D. were arrested on Wednesday in Kyrenia for charges including "Unlawful Possession of Firearms and Explosives, Conspiracy to Commit a Crime."
Police reported receiving a tip-off about a handgun hidden in a flower pot in front of a café on Atatürk Street in Kyrenia. Upon investigation, they found a black Sig Sauer P228 9mm handgun with no visible serial number, a magazine attached to the gun, and nine live 9mm rounds inside the magazine.
Through security camera footage, it was determined that M.C.S. had left the weapon and ammunition at the scene. A search of the room (No. 113) where M.C.S. was staying uncovered another firearm: a black Pietro Beretta 7.65mm handgun with the serial number B 63883 Y, two magazines, and 20 live 7.65mm rounds. These items were seized as evidence.
A mobile phone was also found on M.C.S. During his statement, M.C.S. said he had been instructed via text message to retrieve the Beretta handgun from a vehicle with the license plate SU 607, which he then picked up from the specified location.
Further investigation revealed that the vehicle was registered to U.Y., who was also arrested on Thursday. It was learned that U.Y. had loaned the vehicle to S.D. on the day of the incident. S.D. stated in his testimony that he had gone to Kyrenia with the vehicle to hang out with a friend.
Police concluded from the investigation that the suspects had formed a "secret alliance" with the intent to shoot a businessman in northern Cyprus. It was determined that M.C.S. had come to Cyprus specifically to carry out the shooting, while the other two suspects had helped procure the weapons.
The case falls under the jurisdiction of the Heavy Penal Court due to its seriousness. Police stated that the investigation is ongoing, with efforts to confirm M.C.S.’s voluntary statement and analyze additional security footage. Further statements and forensic analyses of the firearms and ammunition are required.
The judge ordered the suspects to remain in custody for three days as the investigation continues.
