Magnitude 5.2 earthquake hit the Mediterranean off the coast of Cyprus

An earthquake of magnitude of 5.2 on the Richter scale hit off the coast of Cyprus on Friday evening.

According to Turkey’s disaster and emergency management directorate (Afad), the earthquake occurred at 9.13pm Cyprus time at a distance of 74 kilometres from the Turkish city of Alanya, thus northwest of Morphou Bay.

The earthquake’s epicentre was 34km below the surface.

According to initial reports, Following the earthquake, Turkish citizens in Antalya took to the streets, while hotel guests were also seen taking to the streets to see what had happened, while some in Cyprus also felt the earthquake.

Alanya district governor Fatih Urkmezer said there had been “no reports of loss of life or property” in the city.
