Drunk man causes public disturbance in Hamitköy, calls police officers “sons of bi…”

An excessively intoxicated foreign national who disturbed the neighborhood peace by shouting loudly and assaulted two police officers, preventing them from performing their duties, has been arrested.

The suspect identified only as, M.M. (M-23), was arrested on charges of “Assaulting Police and Obstructing Duty,” “Drunkenness,” “Disturbance,” “Improper Conduct and Behavior,” and “Using Offensive Language.” He was brought before the Lefkosa District Court on Tuesday November 26.

During the hearing, the police officer who testified under oath, stated that on November 25, 2024, at 11:15 PM, police officers went to the suspect's residence on Neşe Street, Hamitköy-Lefkosia, to warn him regarding a violation of the Electronic Communications Law.

Police said the suspect who was excessively intoxicated, was in a drunken state on the street, causing a disturbance by shouting loudly without a reasonable excuse. He also behaved inappropriately by flailing his arms randomly.

Police added that the suspect insulted police officers H.Ç. (M-28) and A.S. (M-27) by calling them “sons of b…” He then resisted arrest by pushing and assaulting the officers, who were attempting to apprehend him with reasonable force.

During the altercation, the suspect slammed police officer A.S.'s (M-27) middle finger in the rear right door of a vehicle. He also kicked and scratched officer H.Ç.’s (M-28) right wrist, assaulting both officers and preventing them from performing their duties.

The police explained that the suspect was apprehended using reasonable force under the flagrant offense rule. Surveillance footage was reviewed, and witness statements were collected during the investigation.

The police stated that a review of the suspect’s immigration status revealed that he had previously been in the TRNC as a student. However, his residence permit expired in 2024, and he left the island before re-entering on November 12, 2024, with a 30-day visa.

The police noted that the suspect has no significant ties to the TRNC and requested that the suspect be remanded in custody at the central prison for 10 days until the trial is concluded.
