Cold weather in Cyprus to last until December 20

After the sudden drop in temperatures on Sunday, the Cyprus meteorological service announced that cold weather would continue, with below average temperatures expected to last till December 20.

The service cited German Climate Watch, acting on behalf of the World Meteorological Organisation, saying that the unusually cold weather for the season would be affecting the eastern Mediterranean and the western parts of south Caucasus.

The public is urged to follow daily weather forecasts and warnings

The cold spell was accompanied on Monday by isolated showers expected mainly in the north and east, and light snowfall in the mountains. Strong to very strong north-westerly to north-easterly winds are to continue on the windward coast, up to 7 Beaufort, elsewhere up to 6 Beaufort, which will gradually abate.

Temperatures rose to 13C in the interior, 15C on the coasts and 2C in the higher mountains, where frost is also expected to form. The sea will be rough.

Overnight will see increased clouds and further showers, mainly in the north and east, and further light snowfall. Winds will continue north-westerly to north-easterly, ranging from moderate to very strong, up to 6 Beaufort on the windward coast, later weakening.

Temperatures will drop to 6C in the interior, 8C on the coasts, and -3C in the higher mountains. Frost is expected in the mountains and in semi-mountainous regions. The sea will remain rough.

Tuesday will see clear weather in most areas with a chance of rains mainly in the north, while snow or sleet will continue in the higher mountains. Overnight will see increased clouds and similar precipitation.

Wednesday and Thursday are forecast to be cloudy with isolated rains. Over the week temperatures are expected to rise, reaching up to, or slightly below, the seasonal norm.
