What's in my room doesn't belong to me: Suspect arrested for drugs accuses roommates

A foreign national who was arrested for drug related offense has blamed his roommate for the arrest.

The suspect, O.I, a Jordanian national was arrested for drug offense by narcotics police in Gonyeli on Friday October, 18.

He was brought to court on Saturday charged with illegal possession of drugs.

Police in a court statement said they received information on Friday that the suspect and his friend were selling drugs and took action on the same day.

The suspects were stopped for search after they were spotted driving a vehicle on Gönyeli Boulevard at around 4:00 pm.

Police said the suspects got out of the vehicle and ran away. The suspect O.I was caught 300 meters away with reasonable force, but the other suspect managed to escape.

In a search carried out on their vehicle, three mobile phones belonging to the escaped person and one mobile phone belonging to the captured suspect were found and taken as evidence.

Police said the suspect was asked about his place of residence but did not give information to the police and later led the police to his house in Lefkoşa on his own.

The police searched the apartment except for a room that was locked and the suspect did not help the police in this regard either.

The door was forced opened by the police and during the search, 300 grams of a substance believed to be cannabis, 30 grams of a substance believed to be cocaine, and 2 precision scales believed to have drug residue on them were found.

The police also stated that they found a safe in the suspect's bedroom and when they opened the safe, they found 2 grams of cocaine and 87,000 TL and 50 euros believed to have been obtained from drug sales. They were seized as evidence.

Police said they found a grinder used to separate drugs and foil paper used in packaging. An ID and driving license belonging to a wanted person were also found in the suspect's room.

Noting that the investigation was ongoing, the police stated that the seized items would be sent for analysis and fingerprint examination, that there were 2 wanted persons, and requested that the suspect be detained for 3 days.

Speaking after the police, the suspect accused his roommates and said, "I knew they were selling drugs, but I didn't know there were such high amounts. The items in my room don't belong to me."
