There is no peace in Cyprus, no one respect me!: Student captured running naked on the streets of north Cyprus tells court

young man who was captured running naked on the streets of north Cyprus has been identified as a foreign student who got distressed due to issues with his landlord over rent.

The young man identified as CMT, a 21-year-old Congolese national who is a student in north Cyprus caused a scene when he captured running naked in Hamitköy on Thursday afternoon.

The image which drew reactions on social media attracted the attention of the police leading to his arrest.

He was brought to the Lefkosa district court on Friday on charges of “acting against honour and morality”.

While waiting in front of the court, CMT had a nervous breakdown and was visibly emotionally distressed. He held by the police who reassured and calmed him down.

Police officer who spoke in court explained that the man who is a student in north Cyprus had been seen running naked through Atatürk Street, a public place in the Hamitköy at around 11.30am on Thursday, and that the police had identified and arrested him in the evening.

The man who spoke in court, said he had come to Cyprus to study but that no one respected him.

He added that his father had faced “great financial difficulties” to send him to university, due to the high rent costs in north Cyprus, and that his current landlord “constantly causes problems and shouts” at him.

He said, “I became a slave with my own money”, and that he became angry due to the argument he had with his landlord on the same day which caused him to run through the streets of north Cyprus naked.

“We are barely studying here but we are not respected! There is no peace in Cyprus!” he said.

The judge ordered that the man be held in custody for a period not exceeding 20 days pending a trial, and that he undergo a full psychological examination at the Baris psychiatric hospital in Lefkosia.
