The Infectious Diseases High Committee announces measures to be taken against mosquitoes

The TRNC High Committee on Infectious Diseases has recommended taking precautions against mosquitoes.

According to the minutes of the Committee's meeting published in the Official Gazette on Thursday, the Committee, which met last week with the agenda of "West Nile Virus", listed the methods of protection from the disease as follows:

-Install mosquito nets on windows and doors in living areas.

-Change and/or empty water from potting troughs, wading pools and containers at least once a week to prevent mosquito breeding.

-Eliminate standing water on all surfaces.

-Wear light-colored, loose-fitting, long-sleeved tops and long pants when going outside during mosquito-active hours.

-Prevent mosquitoes from approaching you.

In the report, which noted that the disease was overcome with flu-like symptoms, it was also stated that within the scope of integrated vector control, the Primary Health Services Department would contact the Union of Municipalities and the Department of Environment and ensure that spraying was carried out; “It is especially important that streams, ponds and puddles are sprayed immediately.”

The Health Ministry Undersecretary Deren Oygar said that following the decisions of the committee that convened upon the detection of West Nile Virus in Southern Cyprus a while ago, the ministry sent a letter to the municipalities regarding the fight against mosquitoes.

Oygar stated that they learned through the Health Technical Committee that no other cases had been seen in Southern Cyprus and that it was not expected to be seen after the end of October, and that it had not been seen in the country either, and that they were still taking strict measures.

The Ministry of Health also publishes public service announcements on social media accounts and television to raise public awareness.
