Syrian refugees sent to prison for entering north Cyprus illegally

Two men who were detected among others in the Turkish Cypriot village of Güvercinlik in Famagusta were arrested and sent to prison for entering north Cyprus illegally from Southern Cyprus.

The two men along with a woman who are all Syrian refugees, were detected in the Güvercinlik village with four children after illegally crossing from Southern Cyprus to Northern Cyprus in Famagusta.

They were brought before a military court.

Police in a court statement said at around 11:00pm on September 28, 2024, in Güvercinlik-Gazimağusa, in a place yet to be determined, the suspects, H.El-K., I.El-Y., A.H.B., A.H.Al-M., S.H.Al-M., along with 4 children, one of which is 2 years old, and the others are, 5, 6 and 7 years old, secretly entered and violated the First Degree Military Prohibited Zone when entering north Cyprus from the south.

Police stated that the suspects were brought to court and a detention order was issued for a period of 30 days. 

The police also stated that the investigation was completed and requested that the suspects be tried while in custody.

The court, after evaluating the testimony before it, ordered that H.El-K. and I.El-Y. be sent to prison for a period not exceeding one month while A.H.B and four children be held in custody at the Yıldız Student Dormitory.
