Student arrested for illegal residency after going to obtain entry and exit report
A student was remanded in custody for 20 days until trial following his arrest for living in north Cyprus without a resident permit.
The individual, P.T.S, a Zimbabwean student in north Cyprus was arrested on Wednesday October 23 when he came to the Lefkosia police immigration department to obtain an entry and exit report after it was determined that he had to resident permit.
He was brought to court on Thursday.
Police said during immigration check carried out on him, it was determined that he had been living in north Cyprus without a resident permit for 329 days since November 29, 2023.
The police noted that the investigation and the statement obtained from the Civil Immigration Department confirmed that the suspect was living in the country illegally.
The police stated that the suspect came to the country as a student but became illegal because he did not renew his registration.
Noting that the investigation was completed, the police requested that the suspect be remanded in custody for trial.
The judge ordered that the suspect be sent to prison for a period not exceeding 20 days.
