Man arrested for growing cannabis at his residence

Police in north Cyprus said it arrested a man for growing cannabis at his home.

The suspect M.İ.H.M was arrested on Monday October, 1 for planting and growing cannabis in his house located in Yenikent.

He was taken to court on Wednesday for drug crimes including the purchase and possessing of narcotics, cultivation and possessing of detectors prohibited for import.

Police in court testimony said they went to the address of the suspect, knocked on the door but the suspect did not answer, so they broke in. The suspect was arrested in the hallway of the house with force.

During the search of the house, a newly uprooted 30-centimeter-long cannabis plant was found inside a plastic boot on the balcony, a metal detector, the import and possession of which is prohibited, in a black bag, 4 grams of cannabis hidden in the bathroom of the house, and a piece of stretch nylon.

Police stated that the suspect confessed in his statement that he planted and maintained the cannabis in early September, bought 4 grams of cannabis on September 25 and 5 grams for 50 pounds, and and smuggled the detector into the country from south Cyprus through the Metehan crossing point on September 28.

The police officer stated that an investigation has been launched regarding the suspect who gave a voluntary statement containing a confession.

He stated that the seized items would be sent for analysis and that there were statements to be taken. 

The police requested that the suspect be detained for 2 days.
