Today in history: Terrorist suicide attacks destroy World Trade Center in New York in 2001

The following are some of the major events that occurred on September 11:

1297 – The Battle of Stirling Bridge: William Wallace and Andrew Moray led Scottish forces to victory over the English in the First War of Scottish Independence.

1609 – Henry Hudson discovered the Manhattan Island during his exploration of the river that now bears his name, the Hudson River.

1714 – Barcelona fell to Spanish and French forces in the War of the Spanish Succession, ending the Siege of Barcelona.

1776 – The first peace conference between the Continental Congress and British officials during the American Revolutionary War was held on Staten Island but ended without agreement.

1857 – The Mountain Meadows Massacre occurred in Utah, where a Mormon militia killed members of a wagon train from Arkansas.

1922 – The British Mandate for Palestine was formalized following World War I, setting the stage for future geopolitical conflicts in the Middle East.

1941 – Groundbreaking for the construction of the Pentagon took place, which would become the headquarters of the U.S. Department of Defense.

1973 – A military coup in Chile led by General Augusto Pinochet overthrew democratically elected President Salvador Allende.

2001 – The September 11 attacks, a series of coordinated terrorist attacks killing 2,977 people using four aircraft hijacked by 19 members of al-Qaeda. Two aircraft crash into the World Trade Center in New York City, a third crashes into The Pentagon in Arlington County, Virginia, and a fourth into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

2012 – The U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, was attacked, resulting in the deaths of U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans.
