Three men sentenced to over 5 years in prison for stealing from Nigerian student

Three students were on Tuesday sentenced to between five years and five years and six months in prion after they were found guilty of theft.

The sentence against the defendants identified as P.A.O, I.Y.Y, and B.A who were being tried for robbery was announced by the Lefkosa High Criminal court on Tuesday Sept. 17.

The incident happened at around 11:30 pm on March 2, 2023 when the defendants attacked and stole from one A.M.I, a Nigerian at his residence located behind the Lefkosia State Hospital in Ortaköy because he refused to make peace with them.

Delivering the judgement, the judge said on March 2, 2023, the defendants went to the residence of the complainant A.M.I in an apartment located behind the Lefkosia State Hospital in Ortaköy on the grounds that he did not want to make peace with them.

During a conversation in the bedroom of the residence, they randomly hit the complainant on various parts of his body with their hands and feet as a result of an argument that ensued between them. They seriously beat him, and took 5000 TL in cash and an iPhone 13 pro max brand mobile phone worth 1450 USD from the bed.

They then forcibly took him out of the house, forcibly kidnapped him and then took him to the front of the Lefkosia State Hospital where they left him and drove away in a taxi.

Noting that they found the defendants guilty and sentenced them for the cases they were tried in, the judge stated that robbery and kidnapping were among the most serious crimes.

Noting that such crimes disturb public peace, the Judge also said that the defendants, P.A.O and I.Y.Y were living illegally in the country and were not detected until they committed the crime.

The judge stated that they have recently encountered the same situation in many cases, where those living illegally cannot be detected by the authorities until they commit a crime. The judge stated that measures should be taken to prevent crime before it is committed.

The judge stated that the defendants had no criminal record and that they had returned the mobile phone, which was also considered in their favor. The judge stated that in light of all the facts, they sentenced the defendants P.A.O and I.Y.Y to 5 years in prison and B.A to 5 years and 6 months in prison.
