Teenager sentenced to two years in north for robbing shop
A 17-year-old boy was sentenced to two years in prison on Wednesday after having been convicted of robbing a simit shop in Lefkosia.
The judgement against the defendant named only as B.D, a Turkish Cypriot was delivered by the Lefkosia district court on Wednesday Sept. 19.
Delivering the judgement, the judge said the boy had entered the Sulkem Simit Evi at 3.50am on January 8. When inside, he had stolen 12,000TL in cash from the shop’s safe and caused 2,000TL worth of damage to a camera recording system worth 5,000TL.
She said he had been tried for the crimes of breaking into a shop and trespassing, and said he had been found guilty on all charges. The maximum sentence carries a total of seven years in prison.
She then pointed out that the boy already has three previous convictions for breaking into shops, adding he did not offer any compensation to the shop’s owner.
But she said this was mitigated by the fact he is young, and had been awaiting trial for eight months.
As a result, he was sentenced to two years behind bars.
