Student who stole 140,000TL from a vehicle in Lefkosa, sent to prison for a period of two months

A student who was arrested for stealing huge sums of money from a vehicle because he did not have a home and was living illegally in north Cyprus has been sent to prison for 2 months.

The suspect named only as M.F.U, an international student in North Cyprus was arrested on Sept. 23 for stealing 140,000 Turkish Lira from a vehicle and for living in north Cyprus without a resident permit.

The suspect was brought to a court in Lefkosa on Wednesday charged with theft.

Police said the suspect stole 140,000 TL kept in a bag in the trunk of a vehicle belonging to one O.Z, which was parked in Ortaköy, Lefkosa on Monday Sept. 23.

The suspect was identified from security cameras on the same day, and that 2,965 pounds, 100 dollars and 2,910 TL were found in a search carried out at his resident.

Police said the suspect admitted his guilt in his voluntary statement.

The suspect, who spoke after the police, stated that he did not have a home, that he was going to rent an apartment. He said he needed money for this reason and that he committed a crime for the first time.

He was detained for 2 days for investigation to be carried out on the matter.

He was brought back to court on Saturday. 

Stating that investigation was completed, police said during this period, it was determined that he had been living in the country illegally for 733 days since September 30, 2022. 

Police requested that he should be held in detention until his trial.

The court ordered that the suspect be sent to prison for a period not exceeding 2 months.
