A student who was arrested alongside a Turkish Cypriot man who attempted to kill him by driving a car into him for reportedly staring at his wife has been released on bail, while the man will remain in police custody for 5 more days.

The incident happened at around 5:30 pm on Monday September 9 in Hamitköy, Lefkosa when the Turkish Cypriot man named as F.K, drove his car into a student named as M.A.S for allegedly staring at his wife.

The two men, F.K and M.A.S, then got into an argument which led to a fight.

The police intervened and arrested both men. They were both taken to court on Tuesday Sept. 10.

Police told the court that F.K had a fight with M.A.S because he was looking at his wife which led to a brawl between the two as they hit each other on various parts of their bodies.

Police said F.K had attempted to kill M.A.S by driving his car into him and that M.A.S, deliberately threw a stone he picked up from the ground at F.K's vehicle causing the right front door window window to break. Police said M.A.S, also punched F.K in the face, breaking his nose.

Police stated that F.K was arrested for “attempted murder,” “fight,” and “disturbance,” while M.A.S was arrested for “serious damage,” “intentional damage,” “fight,” and “disturbance”.

They were both brought back to court again on Friday.

Police stated that during their detention period, witness statements were taken, camera footage was reviewed, and it was seen that F.K was the first to attack M.A.S.

Police stated that the investigation regarding M.A.S had been completed and that he was in the country as a student, and requested that he be released on bail with a guarantee.

The police also stated that the investigation regarding the suspect F.K was ongoing, that he would be examined at the Barış Mental and Nervous Diseases Hospital, and that the upcoming report was important, and requested that he be detained for another 5 days.

The judge who evaluated the testimony given court ordered that F.K be detained for 5 more days while M.A.S be released on bail on the condition that he is banned from leaving the country, pay a cash bail of 20,000 TL and report to the nearest police station 3 days a week.
