Student under influence of alcohol causes accident in Lefkosa: Found living in north Cyprus illegally

An individual who caused an accident at a traffic light in Lefkosa while under the influence of alcohol and also caused public disturbance was found to have been living in north Cyprus without a resident permit.

The suspect, M.S, an international student in north Cyprus was arrested on Tuesday Sept. 24 for causing a traffic accident and causing public disturbance in Lefkosa while under the influence of alcohol.

He was taken to court on Thursday for illegal residency, causing an accident, being drunk and causing disturbance. 

Police in a court statement said the suspect, at around 4:00pm on Tuesday September, 24, while driving under the influence of alcohol in Gönyeli, carelessly turned onto Atatürk Street with the vehicle he took without the permission of the owner and caused an accident by blocking another vehicle driven by İstem Uzmaner 40, who was heading west.

Police stated that after the accident, MS started shouting loudly at the scene and disturbing the environment.

It was determined that the suspect had been residing in the country without a resident permit for 521 days since March 15, 2023.

Stating that there are statements that need to be taken and camera footage that needs to be examined regarding the incident, the police requested an additional detention time against the suspect to complete the investigation.

The judge ordered that the suspect be held in custody for one day.
