Student arrested on return to north Cyprus for exam malpractice released om bail
A student who was arrested on his return to north Cyprus for having another impersonate him in an exam in 2023 has been released on bail.
The individual, A.B.R, was arrested on a pending warrant against him at Ercan Airport on Sunday Sept. 22, 2024 on his return to the country.
He was taken to the Lefkosia district court on Monday Sept. 23 charged with document forgery and a two-day detention order was issued against him.
He was brought back to court again on Friday, Sept. 27.
Police said the incident happened at a university in Haspolat on November, 6, 2023 when, A.B.R paid one O.O.O, to take the tourism
research methods exam in his place and made him sign in his place.
Police said O.O.O had committed the crime of document forging when he signed the exam paper and attendance list.
The suspect, O.O.O was arrested after the incident came to the attention
of the police on November, 13, 2023 and the attendance list and
examination paper signed by him were taken as evidence.
Police stated that a warrant of arrest was issued against A.B.R as he was found to have left the TRNC on October, 20, 2023.
Speaking in court on Friday, police said the suspect has been taken to court twice and detained for an additional 5 days and that the investigation was completed during his detention period and that the suspect was an active student, and requested that he should be released on bail.
The judge granted the bail request on the condition that the suspect is banned from leaving the country until trial, pay a cash guarantee of 50,000 TL, sign a personal surety bond worth 500,000 TL and report to the nearest police station three days a week.
