Man who was set on fire while he was sleeping by an angry man for gossiping about his girlfriend dies in the hospital

A 50-year old man who was set on fire by a man who was angry that his girlfriend was being gossiped around has died in the hospital where he was receiving treatment.

The incident happened at around 3:00am on Wednesday September, 4 in Boltaşlı, İskele when the suspect named only as H.T, 43, a Turkish Cypriot, illegally entered Nihat İlhan's residence, poured fuel on him while he was sleeping and set him on fire.

The suspect was arrested and taken to court in Famagusta on Sunday Sept. 8.

Police said the suspect said he did it because Nihat İlhan was gossiping about his girlfriend.

Police told the court that the suspect secretly entered Nihat İlhan's residence between the hours of 3.04 am and 3.25 am on the morning of September 4, poured fuel on him while he was sleeping and also poured fuel on the house before setting it on fire with the intent to kill him.

İlhan who was seriously burnt in the incident was taken to the Intensive Care Unit of Dr. Burhan Nalbantoğlu State Hospital in Lefkosa.

Despite all interventions, Nihat İlkhan could not be saved and died on Friday Sept. 13.

The cause of death will be determined after an autopsy.

The suspect, H.T is still under police arrest.

The police investigation into the incident continues.
