Man sentenced to 8 years in prison for raping his wife

The Lefkosia district court on Tuesday sentenced a man who was facing trial for rape to 8 years in prison.

The defendant, Paça B. a Turkish national was sentenced to 8 years in prion on Tuesday Sept. 17 after he was found guilty of rape by the Lefkosa district court.

Delivering the judgement, the court chief judge said at around 5:00 am on October 29, 2023, the defendant who had an argument with his wife in the Walled City of Lefkosa (Lefkosia city center) punched her in the eye, slapped her in the face, pulled her by the hair, kicked her in the stomach, and continued to beat her while dragging her on the floor. He then took her to the bedroom and hit her on the back. The judge stated that the defendant then tore her shorts, took them off and raped her.

The defendant was arrested following the incident and sent to prison to stand trial following the rape investigation and has been awaiting trial in prison since November 8, 2023.

The judge noted that they found the defendant guilty of all the charges brought against him and stated that the crime of rape is one of the most serious crimes in the penal code, which carries a life sentence. 

The judge emphasized that the defendant tortured and raped his wife, and said that although the complaint was withdrawn, the gravity of the crime did not disappear.

The judge noted that the defendant's lawyer said that his client had drank alcohol on the day of the incident because he had an argument with his wife and that he committed the crime under the influence of alcohol, but he said that they evaluated this issue against the defendant, not in his favor.

The judge stated that women who are economically dependent on their husbands can give up their complaints after a while even if they are subjected to violence and emphasized that it is unacceptable for women to submit to violence.

After evaluating all the facts, the judges sentenced the defendant to 8 years in prison.
