Man arrested for assaulting wife over divorce

In a case of domestic violence in north Cyprus, a man has been arrested for reportedly assaulting his wife for demanding a divorce.

The incident happened at the couples residence in the village of Çukurova around 6:00pm on Thursday.

The suspect named only as KD, a Turkish  who was accused of threatening and assaulting his wife after saying she wanted a divorce was arrested and brought to court on Friday.

Police in a court testimony said the suspect threatened his wife, who wanted to leave him, by saying, “If you divorce me, I will kill you first and then myself,” and then attacked his wife and beat her.

The police stated that the suspect was arrested upon complaint and an investigation was launched.

Police stated that the necessary statements were taken and the investigation was completed, and requested that the suspect, who does not have a similar criminal record or pending cases, be given an appropriate guarantee so that he can be present at his trials.

The judge released the suspect on the condition that he is banned from travelling abroad until his trial, pay a cash bail of 20,000, bring three reliable guarantors who are TRNC citizens to sign a bail bond worth 300,000 TL each, and appear at the nearest police station as evidence once a month.
