Drunk driver hit police officer after failing to stop for traffic check
A police officer was injured after a drunk driver who was signaled to stop for inspection crashed into the officer in Famagusta.
The incident happened at around 1:30am on Tuesday on İsmet İnönü Boulevard in Gazimağusa, when a 20-year-old drunk driver named only as M.K.B, a Turkish Cypriot crashed into a police officer after failing to obey a "Stop" warning.
The police officer's hand was broken in the incident.
The driver was arrested.
Police in a press release said the suspect who had 225 milligrams of alcohol was driving recklessly and refused to obey the “Stop” order of a police officer on duty who was conducting traffic control.
As a result, the driver of the car hit the police officer with the right side of the car, then lost control of the vehicle when turning onto “Anonymous Soldier” Street and crashed into the stairs of a workplace on the left side of the road.
The injured police officer was taken to the Gazimağusa State Hospital and released after receiving treatment for a fracture in his right hand.
The driver of the vehicle, was arrested and the investigation continues.
In an unrelated incident but similar, a man who carelessly crossed the road with a bicycle was inured after colliding with an on coming vehicle.
The incident happened on Monday night on Gelibolu 12th Street in Lefkoşa when cyclist named only as A.N, 37, an Uzbekistan national carelessly crossed to the right side of the road with his bicycle and collided with a car driven by T.E.B, 24 who was coming from the opposite direction.
A.N who was injured as a result of the accident, was taken to the Dr. Burhan Nalbantoğlu State Hospital in Lefkosa for observation.
Police investigation is ongoing.
