Two sent to prison for living illegally in north Cyprus

Two foreign nationals who were found living in north Cyprus without a resident permit were sent to prison for a period of 20 days until trial.

The individuals, named only as Z.K and S.A were arrested in Lefkosa on Monday August 12 and Saturday August 10 respectively.

Police in a court statement said one of the suspect Z.K was detected and arrested when he came to the Immigration Branch of the Lefkosa Police Department to obtain an entry-exit document on August 12, 2024.

During immigration check carried out on him, it was determined that he had been staying in the north Cyprus without a residence permit for 1,641 days since February 14, 2020.

The suspect told the police that he wanted to go to his country, but could not because he lost his passport, so he wanted to get an entry-exit document.

Police said the second suspect S.A was also arrested by teams patrolling the Göçmenköy area of ​​Lefkosa on August 10, 2024.

It was determined during the immigration check that the suspect had been in the country without a residence permit for 1,350 days since October 1, 2020.

Police stated that the investigation into the suspects had been completed and requested that they be tried in custody.

Speaking after the police, one of the suspects, ZK, said that his mother was sick and that he wanted to go to his country.

The judge ordered that the suspects be sent to prison for a period not exceeding 20 days.
