TRNC Met Engineers warns of high ozone in the air during the summer

The TRNC Chamber of Meteorological Engineers, (KTMMOB ) has warned the public of high air pollution particularly in the summer months.

Speaking on behalf of KTMMOB, Dr. Mustafa Altunç said, “As the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Meteorological Department, we regularly warn people about air pollution with dust notifications. People with respiratory issues usually follow these warnings. However, in the summer when temperatures are at their highest, we notice that people still have respiratory complaints even without a dust warning“.

Altunç added, “Our research shows that the real culprit is high ozone levels in the air, not dust. Ozone is a natural part of the atmosphere, colourless, heavier than air, and has a strong smell. High levels of ozone can reduce the oxygen we breathe, causing health problems. It’s an oxidising agent that can harm your health if it gets into your lungs, causing anything from weakness to serious risks.

Pollutants from cars, industrial facilities, and power plants create ozone through photochemical reactions“, Altunç explained.

Thunderstorms also add to ozone formation. Ozone levels tend to increase between 11am and 4pm, especially on hot days. So, everyone, not just those with respiratory problems, should be careful during these times“.

Finally, Altunç mentioned, “Even though the Meteorology Department doesn’t measure ozone levels, it would be helpful to share the air pollution data from the Environment Department’s stations with the public, so everyone can stay informed“.
