Student who went to police to obtain document arrested for illegal residency

A student who was arrested at the police branch in Lefkosa for living in north Cyprus without a resident permit will remain in prison for 20 days until trial.

The suspect, H.A, an Azerbaijan national had visited the Lefkosa police branch on Tuesday afternoon to obtain an entry-exit document when he was found to be an illegal resident in the country.

He was brought to the Lefkosa district court on Wednesday.

Police in a court testimony said the suspect was detected and arrested when he came to the Immigration Branch of the Lefkosia Police Department to get an entry-exit document on August 13, 2024.

During the immigration check, it was determined that the suspect had been in the TRNC without a residence permit for 1,719 days since November 29, 2020.

Police stated that the necessary investigation was carried out regarding the suspect, who was arrested with force and requested that he be sent to prison.

Speaking in court, the suspect said he did not want to be deported, that he wanted to return in the future, and that he wanted to benefit from the amnesty for this reason.

The suspect also said that he came to the country as a student, then dropped out of school, and worked in construction illegally and without insurance.

The judge ordered that the suspect be sent to prison for a period not exceeding 20 days.
