Nigerian footballer die in traffic accident in south Cyprus

A 20-year-old Nigerian footballer has tragically passed away following a car accident in Protaras, Famagusta District, in south Cyprus following an accident when his car collided with an oncoming car. 

The accident happened on the Paralimni-Protaras around 6.30am on Tuesday near Pernera, police announced. 

The deceased identified as Paul Julius, a Nigerian national and footballer plays for the Greek Cypriot side, Enosis Neon Paralimni. He recently joined Enosis Neon Paralimni FC just three weeks ago, eager to make his mark on the Cypriot football scene.

In an emotional statement, Enosis Neon Paralimni FC expressed their profound grief at the loss of their player, who had shown remarkable resilience and determination despite the challenges he faced in his short life.

“It is with deep sadness and pain that we express our sincere condolences on the unexpected loss of our footballer Paul Julius,” the club’s statement read. “The tragic news of his death has shocked us all. Despite the hardships and sufferings he faced to join our family, he remained steadfast and determined to fulfill his goals. His memory will live on in our hearts, and his absence will be felt. We are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time. May he rest in peace.”

The other driver, a 74-year-old man is being treated in hospital but is not in a critical condition.

Greek Cypriot police are appealing for witnesses to the collision, which is being investigated by the Famagusta traffic department.

The football world has been quick to rally in support, with several Greek clubs sending their condolences. APOEL Football Club, one of Cyprus’s most prominent teams, expressed their sorrow over the tragic loss.

“APOEL FOOTBALL (PODOSFAIRO) LTD expresses its deepest condolences to the family of ENP and the relatives of football player Paul Julius who was killed in a car accident this morning. He was only 20 years old…His memory is eternal,” the club wrote.

AEL Limassol, another major Cypriot club, also shared their heartfelt sympathy, with the President, Board of Directors, and staff offering their sincere condolences to Julius’s family and the ENP community.

Paul Julius’s untimely death has left a void in the hearts of those who knew him and the wider football community.
