Minor earthquake hits Famagusta

An earthquake measuring 3.5 on the Richter scale occurred in Famagusta in the early hours of Friday morning.

The very mild earthquake with a magnitude of 3.5 occurred in Famagusta today at 1.06am.

According to north Cyprus’s met office, the earthquake took place around 19 kilometres away from the earthquake measuring station in the village of Tuzla.

The epicentre’s exact coordinates, as given by the north’s met office, suggest the epicentre was off the coast of Paralimni.The earthquake also took place at a depth of 39km.

The last significant earthquake near Famagusta, Cyprus, occurred on January 21, 2021. This earthquake had a magnitude of 5.4 and struck off the coast of Cyprus, about 50 kilometres northwest of Famagusta. The earthquake was felt across the island, but there were no reports of serious damage or casualties.

Cyprus is located in a seismically active region, so earthquakes are not uncommon, although major ones are relatively rare. The island is near the boundary between the African and Eurasian tectonic plates, contributing to its seismic activity.
