Man sexually harassed 16-year-old girl in north Cyprus detained for 2 days

An above middle age man has been held in police custody for 2 days for the purpose of investigation for sexually abusing a teenager in Lefkosa, north Cyprus.

The suspect named only as C.U, a Turkish citizen who was a guest a dessert shop operating on Ali Rıza Efendi Street in Ortaköy was arrested on Saturday August 24, for sexual abuse of a 16-year-old girl.

The suspect was brought before a district court in Lefkosa on Sunday charged with sexual abuse and sexual harassment.

Police in a court statement said the suspect on August 24, 2024, between 2.15am and 4.00am visited a dessert shop in Ortaköy, where he met a 16-year-old girl who was helping her father at the same workplace.

Police said the suspect told the minor, "I will give you 600 TL, buy both top and bottom, what color t-shirt will you buy, don't buy black, buy pink or white, will you buy one with strings" when there was no one in the shop.

Police said that when the 16-year-old girl asked the suspect what he meant, he said to buy a bra.

Police noted that the suspect made inappropriate gestures towards the girl.

The suspect was arrested following a complaint and an investigation was launched.

The suspect gave a voluntary statement containing a confession.

The police noted that the suspect was a Turkish citizen and that his legal status in the country would be investigated, but since it was the weekend, immigration checks would be carried out during the week.

Police stated that there were statements to be taken and camera footage to be examined, and requested that the suspect be detained for 2 days.
