Imane Khelif wins Olympic boxing gold amid gender controversy

Imane Khelif, an Algerian boxer, triumphed in the 66kg gold medal bout at the Paris Summer Olympics, defeating Chinese opponent Yang Liu.

Despite facing online abuse and transphobic comments after a previous match, Khelif remained focused and dedicated to her craft

Khelif’s victory was met with a standing ovation from the crowd, waving Algerian flags in support.

She expressed gratitude to her team, coach, and supporters, saying, “I’m very happy. For eight years, this has been my dream, and I’m now the Olympic champion and gold medalist.”

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) defended Khelif’s participation, emphasizing that she meets the criteria to compete as a woman. IOC President Thomas Bach stated, “These two are women, and they have the right to participate in the women’s competition.”
