Greek Cypriot man sent to prison for stealing caravan in north Cyprus

A Greek Cypriot man who was arrested on suspicion of having stolen a caravan from a filed Yenikent in Gonyeli has been detained for 3 days by a TRNC court on Monday.

The man named only as G.S was arrested in connection with the caravan theft that took place in Lefkosa. He was brought to court on Monday, where it was revealed that he had in fact stolen two caravans on two separate occasions, having illegally entered the north via the village of Akıncılar.

The caravan belongs to one NA, a resident of Famagusta who parked it in a vacant lot on Gönyeli - Yenikent Municipality Boulevard.

Police told the court that the man had most recently at around 5:40am on August 6 stole the caravan from a car park at the Municipality. He had tied the caravan to the towbar of his own car and then driven off. The caravan had been found near Akıncılar village.

Further investigations had found that the same man had stolen another caravan, valued at £9,000  which had been parked next to the King Autos used car showroom which is located on Dr Fazıl Küçük Boulevard at around 6:00an on April 13, 2024.

The man was then arrested on August 8, with police then determining that he had entered the north illegally.

Police searched his vehicle, and found a total of 103 cartons of cigarettes, seven cartons of rolling tobacco, one carton of hookah tobacco, and 25 cartons of tobacco sticks for electronic cigarettes, all of which had been smuggled to the north from south Cyprus.

The tobacco products were all seized by the police and taken as evidence.

The man had then been taken to military court on August 9 for the crime of violating a military controlled area where he was handed a 3-day remand.

He was brought back to court again on Monday with a request for his detention period to be extended as they need the time to examine more evidence, including CCTV footage, and take witness statements.

The judge ordered that the man be remanded in custody for a further three days.
