Congolese woman arrested in south Cyprus for trying to travel with fake passport

A 31-year-old woman, an asylum seeker was arrested on Wednesday at the Limassol port in south Cyprus for trying to travel out of Cyprus using a fake passport.

The incident occurred at around 11am on Wednesday when the woman, originally from Congo, tried to board the ferry to Greece using a Belgian identity card that did not belong to her.

The woman was caught when she presented the document during a passport control check as she prepared to board the ship ‘MV Daleela’ destined for Piraeus.

During the check, suspicions were raised as the woman did not appear to match the photograph on the ID. Further investigation revealed that she is a 31-year-old asylum seeker from Congo.

The woman was arrested on the spot for impersonation. 

During questioning, she admitted to the crime, claiming that the Belgian ID card belonged to a relative.

She was brought before a court on Thursday, where a detention order was issued.
