Biden says US will support Israel’s security against Iran’s threats

U.S. President Joe Biden reaffirmed America’s commitment to Israel’s security against Iranian threats in a phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday, the White House said.

The call, which included Vice President Kamala Harris, emphasised “efforts to de-escalate regional tensions.”

“President Biden reiterated the U.S. commitment to Israel’s security against all threats from Iran, including its related groups like Hamas, Hezbollah, and Houthi,” the White House press release mentions.

Discussions included bolstering Israel’s defence capabilities against rockets and drones, potentially involving additional U.S. military assets, as per the press release.

National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan highlighted Washington’s efforts to prevent a large-scale Middle East conflict.

Separately, Hezbollah reported launching rockets at northern Israel in retaliation for an Israeli strike in southern Lebanon. This marked their first attack since the killing of a senior Hezbollah official earlier this week.

Iran and its allies are reportedly preparing responses to Israel following the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran. His funeral was held in Iran, with his burial planned today in Qatar.
