Bangladesh PM resigns, flees after more than 300 killed in protests
Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned and fled to India, according to reports from the country’s military.
The move comes after weeks of deadly protests that have gripped the nation.
The country’s leading national newspaper reports that Hasina and her sister departed via military helicopter to India, seeking “safe shelter” away from the official residence, as confirmed by Reuters.
The capital has been rocked by violent clashes, with at least 95 fatalities reported on Sunday, including 14 police officers, according to local news sources. Hundreds more were injured in the unrest. Monday saw further violence, with at least six people reportedly killed in clashes between police and protesters in the Jatrabari and Dhaka Medical College areas.
The protests, which began as student demonstrations against a quota system for government jobs, have escalated dramatically. Clashes with police and pro-government activists last month resulted in over 300 deaths, fuelling further protests demanding government accountability.
These have since evolved into calls for Hasina’s resignation after nearly 15 years in power.
Hasina’s reported departure comes as anti-government protesters vowed to march on the capital Monday, demanding her resignation.
Local authorities have restored broadband internet and mobile data services across Bangladesh.
