TRNC increases prison sentences of drivers involved in fatal accidents from 7 to 14 years
The TRNC government has increased the prison sentence of divers who causes fatal accidents from 7 years to 14 years.
The Penalty (Amendment) Bill was unanimously accepted in the TRNC General Assembly of the Parliament on Tuesday July 9.
With the amendment, the court's discretionary power in prison sentences to be given in fatal traffic accidents was expanded, and the upper limit was increased from 7 years to 14 years.
In addition, in order to clarify the court's authority to confiscate a driving licence or to prohibit someone from holding a driving licence, this authority has been extended to include learner licences, regardless of the country in which they were issued.
The rule that the driver of a vehicle must be brought to court within five days was changed to five working days on the grounds that there are problems in practice in cases where the driver escapes or is in hospital.
