Syrian arrested for entering north Cyprus illegally ask to be sent home

A Syrian national who was arrested for entering north Cyprus illegally and violating  a military forbidden zone was brought before a court on Thursday.

Police said the man, a 26-year old Syrian national crossed into north Cyprus illegally from the south and then reportedly asked the Turkish Cypriot police for help to return to his country.

Police said he was arrested at the Erulku supermarket in Neo Chorio at around 8am on Wednesday after having crossed over the Green Line near Haspolat.

Questioned by the Turkish Cypriot police with the aid of an interpreter, he explained that he had left the south and that he wanted help to return to his country.

While in court, the man admitted to having crossed the Green Line illegally.

Police requested that he be remanded.

The judge ordered that the man be held in custody for a period not exceeding two months.
