Student caught with drugs detained for 3 days

A student who was reportedly caught with cannabis found inside his vehicle has been detained in police custody for 3 days on the order of the court.

The suspect named only as KI, a Nigerian was arrested during a traffic check in Şht. Mustafa Ruso Street, Lefkoşa at around 11:30pm on July 27.

Police said approximately 50 grams of cannabis were found in his vehicle and taken as evidence.

The suspect was brought before a Lefkosia district court on Monday on charges of illegal possession of drugs. 

Police stated that after the suspect's attitude and movements became suspicious, the vehicle was checked and approximately 50 grams of cannabis type drugs were found in two separate transparent nylon bags. The suspect was arrested and an investigation was launched.

Police said the suspect said in his statement that the drugs did not belong to him, but did not give any other explanation.

Police officer stated that the seized substance would be sent for analysis and that they would investigate where the drugs were obtained.

The police stated that there were statements to be taken and requested that the suspect be detained for 3 days.
