Student caught with cannabis in Lefkosia said police lied about the quantity found on him
A student who was reportedly found with drugs in Lefkosia and held in police custody for 3 days on court order claimed in court that police lied about the quantity of drugs found on him.
The suspect identified only as FL, 30 a Ugandan student in north Cyprus was arrested by Turkish Cypriot on Saturday July 28 after he was found with cannabis.
He was brought to court on Sunday charged with illegal possession of drugs.
Police officer who spoke in court on the matter said at around; 11:30pm on July 27, 2024, a search was conducted in a vehicle parked on Ahmet Sami Topcan Street in Hamitköy by a team from the Crime Prevention Branch.
During the search, approximately 4 grams of cannabis-type drugs were found wrapped in two pieces of aluminum foil in a pocket between the front seats.
The suspect was arrested and an investigation was launched. His house in Gönyeli was searched the same day, but nothing illegal was found.
Police said the seized substance would be sent for analysis and that they would investigate where the drugs were obtained.
Noting that there were also statements to be taken, police requested that the suspect be detained for 3 days in the first instance.
The suspect, who spoke in court, claimed that the drugs were 2 grams, not 4 grams.
