Student arrested for living in north Cyprus without a resident permit for more than 6 years

A student who was found to have been living illegally in northern Cyprus without a resident permit for more than 6 years has been detained by the police.

The individual, IW, a resident of Lefkosia and an international student in north Cyprus was arrested at around 11:40pm on Sunday July 21 during a visit to the Violence Against Women department at the Lefkosia Police Branch for investigation purposes.

He was taken to the Lefkosia court on Monday.

Police in a court statement said during the immigration check conducted on the individual, it was determined that he had been in the TRNC without a Residence Permit for a total of 2258 days since May 16, 2016.

Police stated that the necessary investigation regarding the suspect had been completed stating that the individual would continue to commit the same crime if he is released, and requested that he be sent to prison.

The judge ordered the suspect to be detained in prison for a period not exceeding 20 days in order to ensure his presence at his trials.
