North Cyprus recorded heavy road accident toll in first six months of 2024

The first half of 2024 saw significant traffic-related incidents: 21 fatalities and 437 injuries occurred across 1,509 traffic accidents.

According to report by Yeniduzen, in 2023, 43 people lost their lives in traffic accidents. By comparison, the first six months of 2024 alone saw 21 deaths on the roads.

According to data from the Police Press Office, between January 1 and June 27, 2024, a total of 1,509 traffic accidents were recorded. These accidents resulted in 437 injuries and 21 fatalities.

Lefkosia had the highest number of traffic accidents, with 480 incidents.

The primary causes of these accidents included 327 instances of speeding, 230 cases of careless driving, 205 failures to stop at road junctions, 161 cases of tailgating, and 186 other factors.

By June 27, 2024, there were 1,509 traffic accidents reported, resulting in 21 deaths and 437 injuries.
 
Lefkosia has highest accident toll
Lefkosia reported the highest number of traffic accidents with 480 incidents. Kyrenia followed with 408 accidents, Famagusta with 297, Güzelyurt with 113, and Iskele with 109.
 
Speeding the main cause of accidents
The leading causes of traffic accidents during this period included 327 instances of speeding, 230 cases of careless driving, 205 failures to stop at road junctions, 161 cases of tailgating, and 186 other factors.

In April 2024, Kibris Postasi reported that Prime Minister Ãœnal Ãœstel has recently brought attention to the escalating issue of traffic accidents, recommending amendments to the Penal Code aimed at reducing them. He specifically urged for increased vigilance on the roads during the holidays.

Over the years, the President of Traffic Accidents Prevention Association (TKÖD) Association, Dr. Mehmet Zeki Avcı has pointed to the various reasons that traffic accidents occur including, poor road conditions and badly lit streets, low standards of driving and a lack of serious consequences for drivers prosecuted for drink-driving accidents. He also mentioned institutional failures which are also to blame.
