Italian national battling with AIDS arrested for stealing phone at a shop in Lefkosa
An Italian national who reportedly stole a phone worth 13,400 TL from a shop in Lefkosia has been detained for 3 days on court order.
The suspect, GG, an Italian national was arrested on Monday July 1 for stealing a phone worth 13,400 TL from a shop located on Girne Street in Lefkosia.
He was taken to the Lefkosia district court on Tuesday and detained for 3 days on court order.
Police in a court statement said the suspect at around 3.30pm on Saturday June 29 stole a Samsung Galaxy A54 mobile phone worth 13,400 TL from a shop in Girne Street, Lefkosia.
Police said a complaint was made on Sunday June 30, and that the suspect was seen in camera footage obtained from the shop stealing the mobile phone and leaving the shop.
Police said the suspect was detected by the employees of the shop when he went to the same workplace on Monday July 1, 2024. He was arrested after the police were informed.
The suspect was searched but the phone was not found.
Police stated that during the entry and exit checks carried out on the suspect, it was determined that he had crossed into Southern Cyprus on June 29.
Noting that the investigation was ongoing and that the phone had still not been found, the police requested that he be detained for a period of 3 days.
The suspect's lawyer stated that his client was an AIDS patient and requested that his medication be provided and the necessary precautions be taken.
