Greek Cypriot police warn of new type of WhatsApp scam

Greek Cypriot police on Wednesday issued a warning regarding a new type of telephone scam where fraudsters are impersonating police officers via the WhatsApp application.

The communication is conducted in English, and the fraudsters request personal and banking information, such as ID cards, debit/credit cards, and other sensitive data.

The police have confirmed that these calls are scams and do not originate from law enforcement.

Members of the public are urged to be vigilant and refrain from answering these calls or following any instructions given by the scammers.

It is important not to click on any links that may be sent and to avoid disclosing any codes received on their mobile phones.

If any banking information has been disclosed during such a call, individuals should immediately notify their financial institution to prevent unauthorised use of their data.
