Call for urgent action to stop child labour in North Cyprus after little boy seen selling in traffic light

As temperatures soar to 40 C, the sight of a little boy selling socks at traffic lights in Lefkosia-Ortaköy raises serious health and safety concerns. Amid rising heat-related illnesses and traffic accidents, immediate action is required from authorities to address this issue.

The increase in child labour, a common sight in Turkey, is now becoming prevalent in the TRNC as well. Children, who should be enjoying their childhood, are risking their lives in dangerous traffic conditions. The sight of a young boy selling socks at red lights is particularly distressing, highlighting the urgent need for intervention to safeguard his well-being.

The extreme summer heat poses severe health risks, especially for children. Heat stroke, dehydration, and other heat-related illnesses are particularly dangerous for young children, making it imperative to raise public awareness and enforce stricter controls to prevent child labour.

Authorities Respond to Child Labour Concerns
Social Services Department Director Alev Ecevit has reported that discussions have been held with both the municipality and the police regarding the boy selling socks in Ortaköy. Ecevit emphasised the gravity of the situation, stating, “It is a great crime for children to be selling tissues and socks, and encouraging them to do so is equally criminal. These children are exposed to numerous dangers“.

Ecevit announced that criminal complaints will be filed against the families of these children, and those responsible will be identified and punished. In collaboration with the Mayor of Nicosia, Mehmet Harmancı, comprehensive efforts are underway to address this disturbing problem.

Call for Public Vigilance and Cooperation
Ecevit urged citizens to report any instances of child labour to municipal police units immediately. The authorities will work with all municipalities to ensure that these reports are acted upon swiftly. Families identified through these reports will receive the necessary support, and those who fail to comply with regulations protecting children’s rights will face penalties. In extreme cases, children may be taken into the care of social services to ensure their safety.

The combined efforts of the public, municipalities, and social services are crucial in tackling this issue. It is essential to protect children from the dangers of working in extreme heat and hazardous traffic conditions, ensuring they can enjoy a safe and healthy childhood.
